Field to smoke

Field to smoke

See the entire lifespan of a Cuban cigar while being guided by those who know them best; the workers. A voice is given to those often forgotten by those who indulge in the luxury of cigars, allowing them to tell their story.

In the winter of 2018, director Kyle C. Goings had the opportunity to travel to Havana, Cuba to study documentary production for three months. Once there, he was enamored with the country’s world renowned cigar industry and wanted to learn more about what made the Cuban cigar so special. On a trip to Vinales, he befriended Alexis, who opened his farm for Kyle to film. There, he learned how the tobacco was grown and aged before they are collected by the government and sent to factories across the country. After each cigar is rolled by hand in these factories, they are packaged for sale in the country and abroad. “Field to Smoke” provides unmatched access to the most iconic industry in Cuba.

“Field to Smoke” had its World Premiere at the 2019 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in Montana. Following that it premiered internationally at the Manchester Film Festival. It was also a Simi-Finalist in the 2019 jellyFEST Film Festival, and an Official Selection in the 2019 Dumbo Film Festival and the 2020 Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival.
